I approached the brief's call to incorporate nature by looking for mascot animals and sketching possibilities. Looking into bananas, I saw that they float, and the idea of a banana boat stuck with me as something suitably weird yet understandable. I initially landed on a tiger as a mascot animal, but changed this to a gorilla based on feedback from the client.
The main challenge was coming up with a color palette that met the requirements for yellow/brown (banana and chocolate) without it feeling conventional.")

I responded to the craft beer ethos of the brand by embracing a comic-book inspired aesthetic to complement the independent and alternative vibe of craft brewing. In craft beers it is not unusual for the flavour to get front-and-center treatment, often with bold and colourful illustrations and I wanted to employ a similar design in dog treats which tend to be dominated by a singular design across all flavours.
The comic book influence informed the choice of fonts and inspired the 'Supergrain' callout on the back.
For Jabba the Mutt, the dog is seen using Jabba's signature hookah, while the background displays graphic forms seen in extended areas around Jabba's palace.")

Things clicked for me when I thought to introduce an animal mascot for the brand. The slow loris, a primate native to Southeast Asia, seemed like such a good animal for this. There was a need to fill out the space with design elements and while searching for appropriate symbols (lotus flowers, geometric shapes) I went back to the source - the rice plant. While this didn't give much of a visual motif, the terraced rice fields were amenable to being made into repeatable and visually appealing abstract patterns.
I wanted bold colours, avoiding earth tones generally associated with organic foods but also trying to avoid common food package colour combinations.")

Design inspiration was from pop art, particularly the kind of comic art paintings produced by Roy Lichtenstein.
I wanted to make the characters contemporary, carrying the ethos into the present day. I found inspiration in the selfie - it seems to be just the kind of banal everyday mundane ubiquity that pop art would want to celebrate.
The brief requested that the Pop Art logo be incorporated into the artwork if possible, and I felt this could be done by having the characters wearing Pop Art merchandise. This kind of happy acceptance of crass consumerism also seemed very pop art to me.
I also tried to bring the old comic art-style forward in time a bit, giving the ink more of a look of technical pens or markers instead of the old quill and brush and using instagram-filtered colours.")

I was aiming to make characters that would integrate well with the design elements seen on the package design for the brand (roughly repeated in the background of the characters). I ended up designing the characters as being flattened, composed of simple shapes and sharp angles with a minimum of detail.")

The flavours 'Pale Ale' and 'Juicy NEIPA' contain a background illustration of The Forge at the Derosne & Cail Company, Grenelle by Edmond Morin (1869) while the 'Double Ambre' depicts Rolling Armor-Plates (1861). These etchings reference the hard labour theme in depicting scenes from the industrial revolution, while the fact that they were themselves etchings, itself a very labour-intensive and time-consuming process, reinforces this theme. The dark theming of the illustration allows it to fit into the background without competing with the branding of the beer company or the flavour name, instead being an interesting detail for the user to discover.
The tabular arrays for holding numerical information also play into the theme, referencing the inventory lists and timesheets that came to prominence during the industrial revolution.")

The 'Katy's Coffee' logo was pre-existing. I ran with the idea of \"cold brew\" and came up with a lineup of coffee beans dressed in winter hats. On the back, I made a playful illustration of the coffee-making process to complement the \"process\" of the brew guide.")
