How Design4 started their web page design journey

Brand name (could also be taskify /

We are a small company with a big desire: to help people do things that are really important in life. Other things our company has done include Astrid, a task management application for Android that has helped over 1 million people complete over 12 millions tasks, and Todoroo, applications that coach people in specific areas such as family history research, piano, and relationships.

Our team shares the following ideas and beliefs:

Change - Moving forward is possible today

Collaboration - We work best with the support, encouragement and accountability of others.

The Real World - We hate Farmville. We want you to win in the real world.

Honesty - When we fail, we admit it. When we succeed we humbly acknowledge it.

Celebration - We celebrate success, both our own and those of others.

Action - Tomorrow is promised to no one. Seize the day!

Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach

We are building a site for people to share what they want to do. The web site functions as a task management applciation, where people create and check off tasks, but friends can comment or provide assistance or accountability.

Our target audience starts with those who currently use task management sites and people who read business books or something like the 4 Hour Work Week or Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. They are professionals or at least aspire to be professional some day.

A core belief in this group is that time is money and are willing to spend to save time. They care deeply about productivity because they have big dreams and big ambitions. They may use to be in the know and like Facebook as a way to share their ideas with the world.

Our site is aimed at people who have many goals in the real world and are motivated to accomplish them. Busy, focused, has a sense of the big picture, and knows he or she needs a little help to get to where they want to go. These people have friends and trust them enough to ask them to help them with their goals. Some of those goals include spending more time with family, advancing in their hobbies and career, improving their fitness, and advancing in their education.

Probable demographics: age range: 20 - 50, ethnicity: any, socioeconomic status: middle class and up, type of work: white collar

We want a site that makes people feel productive when they use it and makes people want to come back again and again.

The site's overall design must help encourage people to do the following activities:

- Create new tasks
- Invite others to join or encourage them
- Encourage others or keep them accountable
- Use it daily

The site design should be:

- clean but not sterile
- social but not spammy
- something that a CEO of a fortune 500 company would find respectable but still friendly enough to be used by a soccer mom.

Must-have components on the site:

- link to sign in / sign out
- branding (logo), click it to go to the home page
- integration with Facebook. Faces of friends using the site.

We have come up with a functional layout/design, but it needs your love and ideas to become great!

Note: we are NOT tied to our logo...

Page descriptions

Landing page:
Goal: get people to try out the site, period. We want people to get a clear idea about how the site would be helpful to them, how it works and how to get started.
Features required: none, though we think allowing users to easily get started by creating a task is cool.

This page shows users what to do and what is happening among their friends. This is the main page for logged in users, and with some modifications may be reused to show a user's friend's tasks and activity.
1) Easy way to add new plans
2) Your profile photo
3) Your current status and a way to update it
4) A list of your current tasks
5) Activity of those you are encouraging/following
6) A list of Inspirational blog feeds
7) Statistics (points and or badges describing progress)
8) Site notices
9) A list of upcoming tasks. Can be in calendar format.

Support Person X page:
When a user creates a task like "I want to blog weekly" and shares it with their friends, this is what they see. Because of this, the page will be the first page ever that many people see. A version of this page will show up in peoples e-mail.

Invitation to do one of 3 options
1) encourage person x
2) send an encouragement (through the site)
3) provide accountability

We also want to help them become more than just encouragers but also use the site themselves.

Existing website

Generally we like that it is clean and easy to navigate for people who use facebook. We like that it is decently professional looking. We like that there are faces and clear calls to action.

The colors and font faces can be improved. The dashboard is not as usable as would be desired because users can choose to either see latest activity OR tasks, but not both.

Example websites

We like the following sites:
Clean and elegant, but a little to sterile. Good design that packs a lot of information onto each page.
Facebook is nice because it is very familiar to our users, I like the areas where the site suggests friends to you, and the Facebook profile page is worth being emulated sheerly for its familiarity.
Sparing use of large text is nice, the colors are nice, simple and attention-getting design. - we like the landing page and how it succinctly explains/shows what it does. provides easy signin and shows that real people are using it.
Basecamp does a nice job of trying to sell you on the benefits of the service from the home page. Testimonials, diagrams, faces, famous companies, statistics, screenshots.
I like the featured users on the landing page does this as well. I think the clear call to action on the landing page is really nice. The site has big fonts, clear calls to action and subtle colors.
