W.peterson got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Application landing page concept required
Check out W.peterson's Web page design contest…
Even though is application will be web based it will be an application used in a corporate environment to provide detailed information on the everyday management of our clients tyre fleets. Primarily the application will be used by two types of user: • Back office staff (Web interface) who have computer experience • Field staff (iPad) limited computer experience but conversant with smart phones.
As the application is to be used in a corporate environment across multiple computer environments we would like a minimalised/clean look that has a smart aesthetic appeal. I would like to design philosophy to be to have the data be the buttons where practical. I would like to reduce the the number of clicks needed to view any information. The system will be smart enough to know what the user should be seeing (due to role based authentication), and as the users interact mainly with asset objects then I believe the focus of the pages should be around various assets. Either Truck, tyres, company sites. I have added some very early concepts for your review, I am by no means a graphic artist and so please use these for ideas on what type of data is required on the screen.
The design concept required that cover the a HTML5 web site. The page will be a Landing Page tailored towards a standard office user that has access to the below modules "menu items" The landing page or dashboard page is where the user will be transported after a successful login. The application landing page will be dictated by the users role so it will be essentially different for each user role. However the design look and feel will traverse across each Menu Items Required • Assets • Library • Reporting • System • Help Elements An element is a function that is associated with a button, however when clicked / Touched may transport the user to a certain part of the application • Home or Dashboard button – Will transport the user back to the landing or dashboard screen • Logout button – will log the user out of the system and transport them to the login screen • User Name Button – Shows the current users Full Name, with login name underneath. If this is clicked the user will be taken to their user details Page Content Page content takes up the main area of the screen. I believe it should display recent activity and other quick view information. Examples of the types of information that could be shown are: • Recent assets – During a session a user will modify numerous assets. Maybe a list of recently modified assets could be shown with contextual data such as a tyre pressure trend graph • Tasks – List of tasks with the ability to create a new tasks • Daily Calender view with tasks shown (view could be day, week, month), a particular user (EG: Supervisor ) may choose to show all of his subordinates task on a single calendar view • Recent activity Icons or graphics. EG: o Add new asset o Add pressure check o Create new user o Last report used • Search facility • Alerts – An alert may be that an asset is due for a pressure check
What to avoid
Clutter, let the data be the controls. The use of right click context menus will be utilised throughout the app, so menu bars should be kept to a minimum. Also note that this will be an application not a public website so ease of navigation is the key.
This design is the beginning of a major software development covering Web, iPad & iPhone applications, so the design that is picked here will be used for all the design work in the future. There is potentially a great deal of work on offer here so please be creative and make your designs wow me.
