We're a startup in the Records Management industry (http://www.fontisinternational.com). Founded by IT entrepreneurs and big4 consultants, our product (Open Retention Manager) solves a very difficult problem for large companies required to retain many types of records. Rather than hiring high paid lawyers in every country that they do business in to tell them how long they must save various types of information, customers subscribe to our data, a legal base of international research, then build a global records retention policy in our web-based management tool. Until now the data has only been available as legal advise from lawyers and consultants. With our system, buying legal advise is like buying songs on iTunes. We offer a better way of organizing the data. A better process to enable teams to collaborate on a retention policy and a really simple application programming interface (api) for communicating policy requirements to all of the customer's computer systems (where most records live these days). We have a couple of competitors to our software management tool but nobody has the data; high quality legal research delivered as a data feed into the software tool.
Our system, ORM becomes the single source for retention policy. All other systems "subscribe" to the retention policy in ORM. Our name Fontis is taken from the Latin meaning source. The fount or spring.

Note: we feel very strongly that through customer education, the Legal Department is our must important audience. While IT often owns the projects we are involved in because most records these days are electronic, IT does not have knowledge to focus on their organizations legal obligations related to records retention. They are a key stake holder but they want to be told by Legal what to do with all the records. The Records Management department, simple doesn't have enough clout in most organizations to drive the process. Ultimately they will be the owners of our system but its really Legal that needs to push for Fontis. They have the clout to make the business listen.

This is our second year attending this annual industry trade show. Last year we announced our software application (ORM). This year we will announce our Legal Data Service (LDS). We rented a 10' x 20' booth. Our subject matter is complex and very detailed. We want the environment to be calming and relaxed. When a conversation with a prospect is going well, it tends to be a fairly long and thoughtful. It takes time to describe how our solution can help. Our idea is the design should support this calming effect, suggesting confidence that our system establishes a retention policy that is truly defensible because its backed up by really well organized legal data.
