How GourmetChef started their other graphic design journey

Summary

Here's your chance to design something and see it on grocery shelves across the US! We're an innovative food company with a unique product, but unless the customer notices us on the shelves it's all for naught. Do you think you have what it takes to go up against the mega-food conglomerates, and make a design which can attract the consumer's eye?

In addition to the prize, we're also giving away a case of our pasta - worth over $50! :)

Company name

FiberGourmet

What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?

FiberGourmet manufactures a line of reduced-calorie, high-fiber foods that both taste good and are good for you. We're currently expanding our pasta selection (more shapes & sizes), and want to overhaul all our packaging once we're at it.

You might want to stop by our website and see our current product line.

The new packaging will be in stand-up boxes, the same size as our macaroni & cheese. We'll be using it for our elbow macaroni, penne, shells, and lasagna, and will probably introduce elements back into the mac & cheese itself for the next printing. The box template is available here.

We'd also like to standardize our line, and will use a similar design for the fettuccine nest bags. Our current bag is available here.

We only absolutely need a design for the front panel, since we have a ton of info to throw on the back & side panels, and might not have room to maneuver. But if you have some ideas about how to arrange it or what to put there, they're very welcome. Our current mac & cheese box is available here, so you can see what kind of stuff is back there currently.

Wants

- Two big, bright-colored stripes through the box, kind of like this. One stripe will emphasize the calories, and one will emphasize the fiber. These are the details for the calories and fiber:
- "40% fewer calories" - that's what really sets us apart from everyone else. This should be together with the comparison between our pasta and standard pasta, and the numbers (210 calories vs. 130 calories) (FDA requirement to have it somewhere on the package at least).
- 18g fiber per serving / 72% Daily Value of Fiber per serving- it's a big selling point too. Compare to 2g in standard pasta, or 5g in whole wheat pasta. Can also make a point that its a great way for kids to get their fiber.
- FiberGourmet logo (available here - we're stuck with it now, I'm afraid ;)
- Name of product (Light Elbows, Light Penne, etc.). Big, important. For technical reasons it should be in black (this is because we intend to have the same set of color plates for all 4 box designs, and only swap out the black plate between each design. This is necessary for the different UPC's and the statement of identity (name of product). The term "light" (as defined by the FDA) means at least 33% fewer calories than the standard version, by the way.
- Some tag line: "The healthiest pasta in the world", "The world's only reduced-calorie pasta", "The only light pasta on the market", "The highest fiber pasta on the planet", "Tastes good and good for you", "Tastes just like standard pasta", "No one else even comes close!" (pick one or two)
- Non-GMO
- No artificial colors or flavors
- NET WT has to go somewhere on the bottom of front panel
- Possible "Net Carbs" comparison We might move this to the back panel, though
- We couldn't use the clear window on the mac & cheese because the cheese pouch might get in the way during filling, but we definitely want to use it for the plain pasta we're designing for now (we're proud of how standard it looks, nothing at all like those nasty whole wheat pastas!). Window outline is included in template.

Don't want

- Something that looks like all the other pastas on the market
- Something that looks old fashioned and stodgy, your grandma's pasta
- A design that's too "busy" - we've had this complaint about our current mac & cheese. Too many fonts, colors, etc.
- A design that's too "empty" - we've had this complaint about our current fettucine nest bags. Yes, you can't win ;)
