Planar Creations specializes in creating beautiful art with tile and other mediums for floors, back splashes, counter tops, walls, etc. The designs chosen from this contest will be included in a catalog that we are currently building. We also hope to create relationships with designers who would be willing to do commissioned work on an ongoing basis for customers who are inspired by their catalog designs. The goal for this contest is too choose multiple designs for the catalog. This means there is an opportunity for many designers to be paid for many designs. IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS 1) Canvas Size: 24” x 24” (or equivalent); or 12” x 24”(or equivalent); or 18” x 36” (or equivalent) 2) The design must work with tile style art. See description below. 3) File must be in Vector format (the designs must be expandable…NO BITMAP IMAGES) 4) Be unique and creative. If I can easily and quickly view the design on the internet, then the design will be eliminated. Try to do something unique. 5) Be Free and Imaginative. THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN DESIGNING 1) Designing in tile is like building a puzzle. 2) Tile designs are done with shapes, not lines. Each shape becomes a 'piece', cut from a tile. Thus each shape in your design must have a single color/texture that could reasonably be obtained in tile or natural stone (see tile vendors below). We won't disqualify designs if color / textures do not exactly match what is available in tile, but please stay within reason. 3) Think of how Tile looks when on a floor or wall. There must be spaces between each piece of the design, surrounding each shape, called “grout lines”. See grout line illustrations. In practice, gaps are always left between tiles and filled in with a material called 'grout'. You should include grout lines between pieces. Preferred width of grout line is 1/8”, although you may vary the lines from 1/4” to 1/16” for effect when required. HINT: Sometimes it is easy to design when a design in 'line art' with single width lines and use 'offset' type functions to create the pieces. Grout lines will play a large role in fine details, and can be helpful in achieving certain effects. We hope you'll some fun experimenting with them. 4) Extreme detail or very small pieces do not work when designing with tile. The smallest pieces should definitly be larger than 1/4” in dimensions. Consider that each piece must be cut out, and handled from the factory, all the way to the point where it is laid on a floor or wall. 5) Remove stroke lines on any piece/shape before submitting. 6) If using lines/stroke, outline any strokes being used so it becomes a shape.
