The Terlingua Preservation Society is a 501(3)(c) non-profit corporation headed up by a group of friends who share a love for Carroll Shelby-designed vehicles and the Carroll Shelby legacy, in particular the very special part of the world he would go for R&R in his heyday: the Texas Big Bend country.
Mission Statement: The Terlingua Preservation Society is dedicated to raising funds in support of the Terlingua, Texas, community, while sharing the Carroll Shelby tradition of automotive excellence. It does this by operating a safe and exciting annual event in the Big Bend region for cars designed by Carroll Shelby. Event highlights include speed and handling competitions, car shows, and scenic drives.
Beneficiaries of the Terlingua Preservation Society's Terlingua 2012 included:
Terlingua Fire and EMS - received $6500 cash, sold TFEMS tee shirts to participants and spectators at airport track event day, plus staff at airport track events were paid and fed lunch
Terlingua High School activity and scholarship funds - enthusiastic students raised over $7360 cash, $860 of it as they gained memorable "hands on" experience by washing a wide variety of awesome vehicles designed by Carroll Shelby. PLUS, an additional $8000 was raised toward a college scholarship fund.
ActiVets - "Healing the Wounds of War with Wilderness" received $1000 cash, per its request.
Family Crisis Center of Big Bend - NEW BENEFICIARY beginning with 2013 event ("T'13")
Many local businesses enjoyed support during their normal "shoulder season" through purchases by event participants of gas, food, lodging, gifts, and services. All supplies and services for the event were purchased in and around the Big Bend community.
Many, many local residents came out and enjoyed free time with event participants and their awesome Shelby cars. The Alpine car show at The Stable was offered free to the community as was observation of all speed events at the Lajitas airport.
There is nothing "green" or tree huggerish about us. We close the only highway into Terlingua and run our cars at speeds over 150mph. We close the airport and run drag races. We are car enthusiests who get together in the middle of the desert and have fun. With our event we have accomplished what Carroll Shelby always wanted to. If you look up the "Shelby Terlingua" you'll find the Black & Yellow Mustang with the rabbit on the hood. Also check out http://www.terlinguaracingteam.com
