Modernise the logo for Battersea Park's vibrant Catholic Community

Our Lady Mt Carmel and St Joseph’s Catholic Church of Battersea Park in Southwest London is looking to redesign its logo. There are a number of changes happening in both the church itself and the neighborhood it serves, and with an effort to redesign the website, now is the perfect time to undertake such a project. History of the church A church has stood on this site for nearly 150 years and the current church was constructed in two stages. The original church was constructed in 1868. This small chapel would have accommodated a congregation of between 50 and 70 people, and now forms our Lady Chapel. By 1879, the Catholic community in this area had obviously outgrown the church building, and a second building was constructed next to the original church and attached to it. This new building is much larger and more spacious. As we approach the 150th anniversary of the church in Battersea Park, we are planning a big celebration for the year 2018. Changes in the neighbourhood Our neighbourhood is now in the middle of intense renewal and building: the iconic Battersea Power Station site is now home to the largest residential building site in Europe and will house both apartments and office space, where companies like Apple will house thousands of employees, along the waterfront. Our parish will also welcome the new state of the art Embassy of the United States of America. There is a buzz about the neighbourhood and the Church hopes to be a beacon of light and love in this revitalized area. Changes in the church The parish campus is seeing many changes as well: the 1970's build primary school has been demolished to make way for a brand new state of the art school to serve the educational needs of the parish. A new development on parish land will fund much needed facilities for our parish that will include office space, disabled toilets, a brand new sacristy and a modern state of the art parish hall. (see photos of what the finished buildings will look like). Design elements The current logo features the 3 central members of the Holy Family – Our Lady, the mother of Jesus, St Joseph the man who raised Jesus as his son, and Jesus himself. Although the current logo does not exist anywhere in a high res version, it has been the symbol of the parish for many years. Mary’s figure in blue is a traditional representation of the Mother of our Lord, and as you can see Joseph is outlined in a reddish brown to contrast/offset Mary’s blue. Considerations for a new logo include – grounding the church in its physical space and the iconic skyline of the Battersea Power Station (the smoke stacks), holding true to the image of the Holy Family in some fashion, use of the color blue for Mary.
