Wayne County Family Law Bar Association
We are an organization of attorneys practicing in a particular area of law (family law, which is divorce, child custody, and related issues) in Wayne County, Michigan, which includes Detroit and is generally an urban area serving about 1.5 million people).
Our membership is very collegial and we have a lot of social events and community fundraising events. We have been together as a group for several years and most of the attorneys who practice regularly in our area of law in our county have been involved in the organization at some point in the past several years.
Our organization is NOT made up of only the elite attorneys, who serve only the wealthiest clients, practice in only the finest offices or firms, and charge only the highest rates. We are hard working attorneys who serve a hard working community during a very difficult time in any family's life. Our members do serve clients from a range of socio-economic status including those with significant, complex estates to be divided but we also offer our expertise to those who are experiencing the difficult economic times, but who still need help with dividing their property or debts. No matter what the socio-economic status of our clients, family law matters affect children in very profound ways, and our members help to guide families through extremely difficult decisions affecting their children.
We have several audiences. These include the public, attorneys who have not been involved in our organization in the past, other professionals who participate in serving families going through divorce or custody situations, organizations that we would like to work with to achieve common goals, such as the State Bar of Michigan Family Law section, and organizations that we want to advocate certain positions to, such as the Michigan legislature and Supreme Court. We would like to be viewed by those audiences as a credible, knowledgeable organization. Wayne County is the largest county in our state and the systems in the County are sometimes viewed by others in our state and even in nearby counties as large, disorganized, and sometimes dysfunctional. However, we have an excellent Court system, an excellent Friend of the Court organization that handles a huge amount of cases, and the attorneys are working with those organizations to continuously improve the way things are done. We have a very experienced, knowledgeable, and diverse group of attorneys who practice in this area, and many have taken part in shaping the law for the rest of the state by representing clients in appeals cases that have established new rules or clarified/extended existing rules.
