I'd rather shy away from showing the obvious 'broken links' unless you can come up with a clever abstract way of showing this. It's important that the logo - or an element or abstract of it - can work as a 16x16 favicon as well as larger. I like the shift effect (http://blogs.sitepoint.com/2010/11/…the-shift/) but don't feel you have to do this. My audience are professional web developers, very interested in technology.
