How 3degreesmentoring started their logo design journey
Who are you known as?
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
3Degrees is a faith-based nonprofit organization in South Carolina that connects children who are living in poverty with adult mentors. Most of the children live in public housing and are struggling with reaching grade level expectations in school. We strive to be holistic in our approach while maintaining realistic expectations.
We chose the name 3Degrees Mentoring because one of the primary reasons mentoring relationships fail is unrealistic expectations. Mentors often volunteer with a savior mentality and quickly get disillusioned when the traumatized child is unable to meet their faulty expectations. Rather than expecting a 180 degree change, we prepare mentors to recognize and celebrate 3 degrees of change, knowing that over the course of their lifetime, this can significantly alter their trajectory.
The mentors are recruited from local church congregations and trained in relationship skills, systemic racism, the reality of poverty's effect on brain development, and resilience. We use repetitive positive messages to try to instill: agency (I have POWER to change my life.), belonging (I am an ACHIEVER.), confidence (I am VALUABLE. I CAN learn.), and determination (I DON'T QUIT.).
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
Community & Non-Profit
What colors do you want to see in your design?
Other color requirements
I'd like to explore the following colors:
Dark neutrals: Formality, mystery, exclusivity and luxury.
Aquas: Empathy, compassion, clarity and precision.
Greens: Growth, harmony and success.

We'd like the logo to be simple memorable. We'd like a standalone logo that can be used by itself or with our organization name. A representation of the work we do, particularly if possible to be symbolic of the direction (arrow/compass/movement,etc) or trajectory change we hope to see in the children (we refer to our mentees as achievers).
We are hoping to get a variety of submissions, so we welcome the designers to use their discretion/artistic license. We'd like to see some options that don't contain the number 3 or letter d, more symbolic. We hope to use the logo symbol eventually for rubber bracelets and t-shirts for the children as well as the mentors.
