Vermont Island Trail Map
Check out boxlessconsulting's Illustration or graphics contest…
This is a trail map for an island in Jamaica Vermont. It is for the home owners and the family and friends that will walk the trails.
What's your vision?
I am looking for a map to be made from the terrible drawing that was made of the island in Vermont. I have enclosed actual pictures of some things on the island for reference purposes but I do not want actual photographs on the map The island will hang on a wall vertically with Irene’s Dead Point at the top of the map and broken log pass as the bottom of the map. So all words should be oriented so that you can read them that way. I understand it will be hard to read what I wrote on the map so I will describe as much as I can below. Starting from the top of the island there is a farm house and then four houses going down the left side of the river (Baby West River). The top point of the island as I said is called Irene’s Dead Point (4 houses from hurricane Irene washed up on the tip of the island during the storm. The black dotted line on the island is a walking trail. There is a side trail near the top of the island called New Trail. To the left of that is Dead End Hole (it is just a big hole in the earth where the path jogs to the right. And across the path is a big fallen log (called Fallen Log). Off to the left of the island should be a compass rose (see image). To the right of the island on the other side of the river from New Trail is River Plateau Building Site Next traveling down the island there is Long Mystery Ravine across from some of the houses near Meadow Road Field. Going down the island after the ravine the path goes to the right and there is another ravine called Mystery Rock Ravine. The path takes another jog through Milk Weed Field (lots of milk weed). Next there is an old rock wall that goes across the entire island called Old Meadow Rock Wall. There is an opening in the wall where the path goes through it. As you continue down the island right after the rock wall is Deer Massacre Plateau (where a coyote killed a deer) and the island drops down toward the river and that part of the island is called Drop Down Gulch. Also, to the left of the rock wall is a run off river that appears when we have a lot of rain and we call that Run Off River #3. This connects with Run off River #2 where you can find Fallen Tree Bridge which is basically a huge pine tree that fell over the run off river that we need to cross the river when we walk the path during the rainy season. Also on Run off River #2 is Garbage Pit falls where debris from hurricane Irene still sits and creates a water fall. To the left of run off river #2 the path continues in a loop and you can also see another run off river called Run off River #1 FYI - The river on the right side of the island (Mama West River) is much bigger than the river on the left side of the island (Baby West River). The path continues down the island and comes to Pine needle Circle where there is a pine forest with a big clearing in the middle of it which is the future site of a house (maybe put a house there) And there is a path from pine needle circle to the mama west river that a lot of beaver frequent and cut trees down so we call it Beaver Run. The purple line is driveways on the island and Rt. 30 /100 off the island. The road goes down a hill and over a covered bridge to get on the island (see picture) and we call that Rivers’ Bridge. The first house you come to is a big log cabin with a green roof that is called Petucks’ Log Cabin (see picture). In the river off of Petucks’ Log cabin is a a couple of islands in the middle of the river called Marsh Islands. At the southern point of Marsh Ilsands is a Beaver house called Beaver Lodge. The second house is Macdonalds’ Dreamcatcher Lodge (picture with lower metal roof). This house has a little wading pool between the house and the river called Stone Wading Pool. The house at the lower end of the island is Kagan River Ranch and it is a cedar shingled house(see picture). HOUSES SHOULD BE PARRALLEL TO THE WATERS EDGE WITH THE FRONTS AWAY FROM THE WATER – Across from the houses on the edge of Baby West River is a swimming hole where rock ledges line the river and it is called Rock Ledge Swimming Hole. Also , walking path should be a dotted line and the road on the island is dirt and should look like a dirt road on the map (route 30 is a paved road ) also. beaver lodge should look like a little beaver house - google what a beaver house looks like. As you continue down the walking path past the houses you pass Camera Alley (USE OLD STYLE SLR CAMERA IMAGE) where we have a camera in the woods that has taken pictures of moose, bear, coyote, fox, beaver, turkey and deer (you can put drawings of some of these on the map if you want). Past camera alley is Stump Dump. And right next to the stump dump is a big clearing with 8 or so oak trees which we call Oak Meadow. At the bottom of the island is a broken log where the path goes through the split - called Broken Log Pass. To the right of the island the land slopes up to Turkey Mountain – just need to put an arrow to the right showing that turkey mountain is to the right I think 12 to 18 inches wide by 3 feet high is probably about the size I would print out the poster to . I have included a google map image of the island. The coordinates for the island (which you can put somewhere on the map are (43.089760, -72.768019) Lat Long. The name of the island is Jamaica Vermont Island GPS Coordinates 43˚ 5’ 23.136” N 72˚ 46’ 4.868” W
Have fun with this map. It should be informative but also a piece of art. You can make it a traditional map or go all funky to make it interesting.
