We need a custom piece of artwork that we will use as a projected backdrop. Our screen, for this backdrop, is 22.5 feet high and 40 feet wide. We will have people (villagers, shepherds, animals, etc) walk in front of this backdrop and it needs to look like these actors and animals are IN the scene. We need depth and realism. Here's what we're looking for:
PROJECT: Our screen dimensions, that are visible, are 16:9. However, the image I'm looking for is three times that wide. The drawing needs to be contiguous, but will be shown 1/3 at a time. The actual drawing, on our screen, will "slide" to change scenes and depict movement of the actors. So, I'm looking for a single drawing that I will show in thirds, each third having a 16:9 dimension that will be projected 22.5 feet tall and 40 feet wide. This is a theatrical backdrop and will set the scene for the realism of the whole act....it needs to look real. The actual dimensions I'm looking for are 48:9.
THIS CONTEST IS JUST FOR THIS PART - THE LEFT THIRD
THE LEFT THIRD: This part of the drawing (16:9) needs to be a street level scene of a biblical town at dusk. It should have realistic buildings and be proportional to a human walking in front of it. It should not include the whole dirt street, but at least part of it to show that people are on it. Remember, our screen is 22.5 feet tall, so create the height and width of the buildings accordingly. This 1/3 of the drawing should have houses, buildings, fabrics, and "things" that you might see on the street of a village of that era. NO people or animals should be included, we will have live ones in front of this drawing. It should also have depth of field and show other buildings in the background fading out. We will have peddlers, beggars, villagers, etc. in front of this.
ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT PART OF THIS CONTEST, THE WINNING DESIGNER MAY BE OFFERED A CHANCE TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT AS FOLLOWS:
THE MIDDLE THIRD: This part of the drawing needs to be a country scene from the middle east in that era. Basically just rough countryside and hills with primitive dirt path(s) that could have been used. Arid....not desert but close! It needs to merge into the above mentioned village on the left hand side and merge into grazing land for sheep in the drawing listed next. This area of the drawing is a transition between our two major scenes. This scene must be sized proportionally to the other parts.
THE RIGHT THIRD: This part of the drawing needs to be a hillside, at night, with sheep in the background. We will have live actors and live sheep on the stage in front of this, so we need realism and we need the drawing to have more detail in the foreground. IF it has any shelters for the shepherds, they would need to be date and material appropriate and on the right side of the drawing. This area needs to contain enough green to look like a grazing area for the sheep.
When the drawing is completed, we will need a version of it in both a late evening (dusk) setting AND a nighttime setting with some lights in the buildings and some stars. We will work with the winner on tweaking the winning design.
The winner designer may also be hired to do two more, less complex backdrops that we need. We're looking for someone we can work with that has the vision for what we're after. We may not run a contest for these, but may just hire the winner.
I have attached some other drawing we have been using on a wrap around screen. These drawings wrap around the audience and are backgrounds we use at a later time. We would like to have these updated and made more realistic at some point, but this gives you an idea of what we're showing in another scene.
I also have included a couple of photos of the stage as we have used it in the past. These scene you will be designing for is NEW this year and a screen will come down and cover what you see on stage....your backdrop would be projected and actors would be in front of it.
I hope that's enough information. Good luck!
