UsingAndroid got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Create an eye-catching design for a book on Using Android.
Check out UsingAndroid's Book cover contest…
I am self publishing a book on Using the Android Mobile Operating System. The target audience are people with Android devices or people considering purchasing one. The book will be launched on the Kindle Store and the Google Books Store. We are not considering printing physical books at this stage.
What's your vision?
We want an fun book cover that stands out amongst the other titles in the Kindle store. I encourage as much creativity and original thought as possible so don't be constrained too much by my thoughts. There is a lot of creative fun and freedom in this project so go wild. The only real constraints are that the cover should be eye catching and strike the right balance between being high tech and yet approachable. I would like the Android logo on the cover but not to the point that it looks too comic like.
I welcome the inclusion of images of android phones, but if it is a recognizable phone then it must be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (see attached images for an example), abstract phone images is probably a better option. You might consider echoing the Google branding with bold primary colors and white backgrounds. For some inspiration on the Android design visit http://developer.android.com/design/index.html I toyed with some ideas of puzzle pieces or lego pieces in primary colors as this ties in with the book's purpose of putting the pieces of the android puzzle together for people. If you have a better idea please use it. I also tried my hand at designing the cover myself but am not satisfied with the results, see attached images for some inspiration (don't laugh I am not a graphic designer). Enjoy. I really look forward to some exciting and fresh designs and I hope you have some fun.
