TITLE: The Awakening of Washington's Church SUBTITLE: How a church lost everything and gained what matters most. BACK BLURB: "Our patron saint was one who wavered and broke, just like you and I have time and time again. I think that’s why I love him so. And yet, he regained his faith and courage, and you and I have, too. We love the church for which he died. We wish it could be perfect. We know from time to time it needs to be awakened and reformed. We believe such a time is here again." - John Yates BACKGROUND: The book tells the story of a historic church—the same one that George Washington served as a vestryman over two centuries ago. In the 1970s it was a sleepy place, but a new young pastor changed that. He proclaimed the Good News. People started attending. Then more people. Within a decade, the church was building a huge new building next to the historic sanctuary to host its thousands of members. But the authentic faith that helped drive this growth ran into conflict with a mainline denomination. The conflict eventually led to separation and costly litigation. The church that had thrived for so long lost its property—the priceless land and buildings that Washington had once graced. Was it worth the cost? What would happen after such a loss? Washington’s church awakened, and not in the ways anyone could have predicted.
What's your vision?
OVERALL: be creative. This contest is open to any and all ideas. Below are general guidelines and thoughts, but please don't feel limited. DESIGN AND STYLE: The cover should have clear, bold, open, and inviting fonts. The style should be simple. No image is necessary if the title itself can be iconic. The title should stand out noticeably, maybe even occupying much of the page. The words "the" and "of" might be in all lowercase, and the other words ("AWAKENING...WASHINGTON'S CHURCH") might be in all uppercase. The title could also be left justified or interestingly arranged (rather than centered) depending on the design. The subtitle can be included if it fits. No particular color scheme is required. POTENTIAL IMAGE: A basic image or two might be woven in. Possibilities include a cross, a sunrise, light, sun through clouds, or something growing. Another cool idea would be a faint cross (shadowy or light) somehow overlaying the cover. Open to any ideas for illustration--i.e., a bold, hand-crafted feel. There could also be texture, like broad brush strokes. Most important: the image and/or texture should not detract much from the simplicity of the cover. SAMPLES: The attached images offer a few ideas of the style. I've also pinned some other cool covers here: https://www.pinterest.com/jbsimmonslight/church-book-cover-ideas/. But again, these are just ideas. Your best creative ideas are absolutely welcome and encouraged. AVOID: please don't include a profile of George Washington's head, a church building, a random steeple, anything too old and dusty looking, too much frill. OTHER BASICS: the book will be 5.25 x 8 inches, and around 250 pages. The cover should have a front, spine, and back. The author's name should go near the bottom. The placeholder for the back blurb text is in the background info. The attached image of a bishop's hat could go at the base of the spine, where a publisher's emblem typically goes. Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions. Thank you! J.B.
