Celebrate Design Day is on 9/9, and it’s our favorite day of the year! It’s our opportunity celebrate how design makes our world more colorful, more delicious, more productive and more connected.

Celebrate Design Day is a global event. Why? Because design has no borders. Our crew of international designers changes the world everyday—in their own communities and beyond.

That’s the power of design. And let’s face it: great design just makes everything better.

Curious how we spent our second annual Celebrate Design Day? Scroll down for stunning wallpaper downloads, a playlist from our designer community and photos from 99designs meetups and celebrations held across the globe.

Celebrating around the world

Our global design community definitely knew how to live it up for the second annual Celebrate Design Day. This year, they joined in designer meetups, happy hours and a first-of-its-kind Pop-Up Gallery.

Oakland, USA

99designs’ Oakland headquarters ramped up to the main event with an outdoor spray-painting class hosted by 1AM, a local gallery and graffiti art collective, to get in the creative mood. Staff experimented with spray can tips and techniques, stenciling t-shirts and painting the motto “Design Done Differently” across wooden panels.

For Celebrate Design Day, the office opened its doors to the local community for our first ever Pop-Up Gallery, which showcased some of the amazing art, brands and products created here on 99designs.

Guests enjoyed light bites, wine tastings by Guthrie Family Wines (whose labels were all designed by Sign2In), and fun photobooth snaps.

The evening wrapped with a charity raffle benefitting the American Cancer Society, featuring products from 99designs customers including Brenda’s Meat & Three, Hopsy, Split Tree Cocktail Co., Guthrie Family Wines, Dalloway Chocolate, Paleo Baking Company, Sandhills Candle and more!

Bacolod City, Philippines

Nasty weather didn’t hold back our Philippines designers, who met up at gallery and event space Block 17 Art Space. Lejee and Arissa, from 99designs’ Support Team, hosted the event.

The evening was packed with designer talks, a mural painting collaboration and two presentations.Barry Cervantes, Block 17 Art Space’s resident artist, spoke about his experience working as a freelance designer and ZombiElvis spoke about his experience on 99designs.

Cluj, Romania

99designs romania meetup

Bloobyrd_Art hosted our first Romanian meetup at the coworking space, Impact Hub Cluj. Designers were invited to design greeting cards to take home and remember the day by. As she put it, “We got to know each other while unleashing our creativity!”.

Afterwards, the group went to a rooftop restaurant and had some more laughs, shared 99designs war stories and bonded.

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Mr. Pinggle hosted the Bangladesh meetup at Creative IT. Limited, where designers mingled, shared personal design experiences, participated in a creative contest and competed in a prize raffle for fun 99designs swag.

Melbourne, Australia

Our Melbourne office was busy throughout the week, competing in a charity bake-off benefitting the Global Women’s Project and design trivia. Winners earned a Barking Mad bottle of wine and the runner-ups won some West City Brewery beer—both designed on 99designs!

The week was capped off with a collaborative mural and happy hour, although the staff favorite may have been the hashtag printer, which printed off Polaroids throughout the week whenever someone used the #CelebrateDesignDay hashtag.

Colombo, Sri Lanka

Designers in Sri Lanka headed to RSCU Skills Centre, Royal College Union for their meetup. The evening was both educational and creative, as designers sat through two presentations on self-marketing and the importance of design psychology, as well as two design challengers.

The meetup host, emmes concepts, noted, “At the end of the event, I talked to all the participants personally and we discussed making the 99d local community stronger. Most of them are interested in more design meetups.”

Central Java, Indonesia

Top designer, R O B, hosted our Indonesian meetup at Kayu Arum Resort, Salatiga. Designers gathered from across Central Java region, including Salatiga, Temanggung, Cepu and Magelang.

The event focused on finding success on 99designs and professionally as a designer, with presentations on 99designs’ new designer levels, what generic design is (and how to avoid it), and self-marketing.

Afterwards, R O B noted, “I’m really, really happy to have had the opportunity to meet with my brothers and sisters from (neighbouring towns) Temanggung, Magelang and Cepu.”

Berlin, Germany

Our Berlin office kicked off design week with a yoga session to get in the spirit, before diving into their big creative project—a tape art session where staff decorated a large, blank wall with a colorful array of stenciled tape designs.

The week continued with lively creative sessions, delicious food, a dedicated “Idea Lab” and a fun Friday happy hour.
